The first over 400 mph speed record was set by Flt Lt G. H. Stainforth on 29 September 1931, his six runs over the set course averaging 407.5 mph (655.81 km/h). This was achieved in the Supermarine S.6B SI 595 which, just over two weeks earlier on 13 September, had been flown by Flt Lt J. N. Boothman to win the Schneider Trophy Contest outright for Britain at an average speed of 340.08 mph (547.31 km/h).
