The largest airborne assault mounted by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War was operation 'Mercury', the landing of 22,750 men on the island of Crete beginning at 07.00 h on 20 May 1941. The Luftwaffe used 493 Junkers Ju  aircraft and about 80 gliders. The assault was made by 10,000 parachutists, 750 troops landed by glider, 5000 landed by Ju 52/3 and 7000 by sea.
