The longest production run of any US fighter of the Second World War was that of the Vought F4U Corsair, first flown on 29 May 1940, at which time it was the most powerful naval fighter in the world. Initial deliveries to US Navy Fighter Squadrons began on 3 October 1942, the type remaining in production until December 1952.
