The world's first piston-engined aircraft to attain a speed of more than 500 mph was a specially prepared Republic XP-47J Thunderbolt (43-46952) powered by a 2100 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800-57 engine. This occurred on 4 August 1944 when a speed of 504 mph (811 km/h) was recorded.
