The true ancestor of modern airliners, with all-metal structure, cantilever low wings and retractable landing gear, was the Boeing Model 247, the prototype of which was flown on 8 February 1933. A total of 75 was built. The major production version was the Model 247D, powered by two 550 hp Pratt St Whitney Wasp engines driving controllable-pitch propellers. Cruising speed with ten passengers and 400 lb (181 kg) of mail was 180 mph (304 km/h).
