When Britain stood seemingly alone in the hectic and volatile Summer of
1940. All that stood between winning and losing freedom was the Hurricane and
Spitfires and a handful of brave fighter pilots. These guys came from all walks
of life. They never faltered in their belief and determination and bravery that
Britain would remain free and fight on against overwhelming odds.
In spite of being a small island country, the British were a strong people. The
RAF proved to be brave fighters against the mighty Luftwaffe. During the Battle
of Britain in 1940, the RAF shot down hundreds of the Luftwaffe's Messerschmitt
Bf-109's. Not only did the RAF fighters go up to meet the advancing Luftwaffe
fighters and bombers, they did so against seemingly overwhelming odds. At the
end of the battle, Winston Churchill said: "Never in the field of human conflict
was so much owed by so many to so few." Below are some of the R.A.F's aircraft that shaped history and became legends. |
