The first United States air attack on the Japanese mainland was made on 18 April 1942. This occurred when 16 North American B-25 Mitchell bombers led by Lt Col James Doolittle were flown off the US Navy carrier USS Hornet to raid Tokyo and other targets. Unable to return to their carrier, most aircraft landed in China.
